Digital Forensics Laboratory
Established in 2010, the DataExpert Digital Forensics Laboratory is the first and only privately owned full-service digital forensics lab in Hong Kong. It brings together cutting-edge equipment and software so that IT experts, investigators and lawyers work together on computer forensics, mobile device forensics and forensic data recovery for information security incidents and crimes.

Three of the workstations a DataExpert laboratory is built around, each modelled in 3D. Open one and turn it over.

One drive, its whole working life — and where DataExpert stands at every step. While it holds evidence, our forensic lab and instruments acquire, examine and recover it. When it is retired, our 3D service makes sure nothing on it survives. Scroll to drive the sequence.
The suspect drive is mounted behind a hardware write-blocker and imaged bit for bit. Source and image are hashed; if the two values disagree, the image is void. The original is never the working copy.
Tracks are walked from the outer edge inward. Deleted files, carved fragments, chat histories, user artefacts and system timelines are rebuilt into a single chronology an investigator — or a court — can follow.
Our kitSUMURI RECONADF DEIADF MDI
Unreadable sectors are flagged, not skipped. Firmware modules are rebuilt, heads replaced inside a Class 100 clean room, and damaged media re-read until the data gives way. Hard drive, tape, SSD, phone — there is usually a way back.
Our serviceData recoveryThe laboratory
At end of life, an NSA-listed degausser drives a field of 10,000 or 20,000 Oersted — at least 1.5× the media’s coercivity — through the platter. The magnetic domains that held every byte are randomised. There is no software that undoes this.
Degaussed media is shredded to DIN 66399 — 9×9 mm for hard disks, 2×2 mm for SSDs and phones — tracked on paper, and passed to certified recyclers. You receive the certificate, not the risk.

Case file 02 / 02
Gartner and others report that most organisations have no clear procedure for end-of-life IT assets — which is precisely where data leaks. Our one-stop media disposal service closes that gap: Degaussing, Destruction, Disposal.
D 1 — Degaussing
A magnetic field strong enough to randomise every domain on the platter. The drive is not wiped in software; it stops being a storage device.
Field strength 10,000 Oe+ · NSA listed
D 2 — Destruction
Paper, drives, SSDs, tape, USB, credit cards and optical media reduced to particles on site or at our facility, under observation.
Paper particle 1×2 mm · Onsite option
D 3 — Disposal
Certified recycling partners, documented transport, and a certificate for every asset. Up to 98% of serviceable equipment is re-marketed rather than dumped.
Re-market rate up to 98% · Certificate issued
IT asset disposition
Wiping, degaussing and shredding for businesses, organisations, government departments and individuals — to solutions that meet or exceed the compliance standards and laws of secure data destruction. Cost-efficient and quick for you; protection from data leakage, legal cost, public embarrassment and environmental harm.
Option A
Our staff bring the degaussers, shredders and tools from the DE Data Disposal Centre to your premises. Your media never leaves the building.
Option B
Collected media returns to the DE Data Disposal Centre the same day — it is never kept off-site overnight.
Workflow — proposal to certificate
The most secure disposal method for magnetic media. A high-energy field destroys the data and the drive’s internal firmware within seconds — recovery is impossible.
Each item is degaussed on a qualified unit whose field is at least 1.5× the coercivity of the media.

Storage is overwritten with random binary data. The information is gone for good, while the hardware survives to be reused or resold — the greener end of disposal.
Hardware-based and software-based erasure, to 30 recognised standards, from NIST 800-88 Clear / Purge and IEEE 2883-2022 to DoD 5220.22-M and cryptographic erasure.

Devices are cut into microscopic pieces. Hard drives, optical discs and above all flash media — SSDs, phones, memory cards — whose memory chips must be physically broken to be unrecoverable.
Shred size is rated to DIN 66399, the security-level standard for media destruction.

Compliance & standards
Meets or exceeds the secure-destruction standards regulators and auditors ask for.
Degaussing
Guarantees the media has been successfully degaussed.
Wiping
Generated individually for every piece of media wiped.
Shredding
Certifies the data was destroyed to the relevant standards and disposed of properly.
